Montefiore and The Rehab Pavilion at The Weils Receive Highest Rating from U.S. News & World Report Best Nursing Homes of 2014

2014 US World & News Report Logo

Montefiore in Beachwood, Ohio and The Rehab Pavilion at The Weils in Chagrin Falls, Ohio have both received the highest possible overall rating of five stars in U.S. News & World Report’s sixth annual Best Nursing Homes of 2014, available exclusively at http://www.usnews.com/best-nursing-homes.

The Best Nursing Homes 2014 ratings highlight the top nursing homes in each city and state, out of nearly 16,000 facilities nationwide. U.S. News’ goal is to help users find a home with a strong track record of good care. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, about 60 percent of individuals over 65 will require some type of long-term care services during their lifetime and over 40 percent will receive care in a nursing home for some period.

Best Nursing Homes draws on data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), a federal agency that assesses homes in three categories—health inspections, level of nurse staffing, and quality of care—and gives each an overall rating. U.S. News awarded the “Best Nursing Home” designation to homes that earned an overall rating of five stars from CMS in January 2014.

“We are thrilled to receive this outstanding distinction for both of our senior campuses,” said Lauren Rock, president and CEO of Montefiore and The Weils. “We pride ourselves on the dedication and expertise of our clinical staff who work tirelessly to ensure the needs of our residents and patients are met on a daily basis. Our continuum of care campuses offer the full spectrum of services including post-hospital care, long-term care, assisted living services, memory care, hospice & palliative care, home healthcare, private duty services and outpatient therapies,” Rock continued.

“The rising number of five-star homes is encouraging,” says Avery Comarow, U.S. News health rankings editor. “It speaks to care that is steadily becoming more skilled and compassionate.”

The Weils Announces Expansion Plans to Build New Pavilion for Residential Memory Care

The Weils Announces Expansion Plans to Build New Pavilion for
Residential Memory Care

The Weils, a Montefiore senior living community in Chagrin Falls, announces a $4 million expansion project on its campus located at 16695 Chillicothe Road (Route 306 – just north of E. Washington Street). The groundbreaking for this one-floor, 18,000 square foot assisted living pavilion for individuals with dementia is planned for spring 2014 with an opening for early spring 2015.

The pavilion is targeted to individuals who have memory impairment and are no longer able to live safely in their current residence but don’t yet need the comprehensive services of a nursing home. This inviting and intimate pavilion consists of 18 suites with three distinctive households.

According to Lauren Rock, Montefiore & The Weils president and CEO, “The pavilion will integrate the principles of person-directed care with an environment specifically designed to assist those with memory impairment in a safe and meaningful setting.” She continued, “This planned and purposeful design promotes partnerships with families while integrating the latest technologies and safety innovations in a relaxed, homelike environment.”

Each of the three households of six suites is self-contained and will be overseen by trained memory care staff that is on-site 24-hours a day, seven days a week.  All 18 spacious suites have a full bathroom with shower – all designed with safety in mind. Family-style dining rooms will serve as gathering spaces for eating, activities and socialization. The three households have their own family room for relaxing, visiting, social engagement and activities. A multisensory room incorporating special lighting and sounds, plus tactile and visual stimulation is for all to utilize whenever needed

A secure, centralized entrance foyer will greet guests who will be able to park outside the pavilion. Easy access to secure walking paths and courtyard gardens with lovely sitting areas and walking paths enhance the overall ambiance.

Designed by C.C. Hodgson Architectural Group, a nationally recognized and award-winning industry leader in senior housing, based in Cleveland, Ohio, brings fresh thinking and innovative design principles to the project with over 30 years of specializing in senior living environments – always guided by their philosophy that environments affect people’s behavior.

Both Montefiore and The Weils have partnered with Dr. Lori Stevic-Rust, Ph.D., ABPP, clinical psychologist and dementia expert to oversee dementia-related programming on both campuses. Dr. Stevic-Rust has developed innovative and therapeutic programs in dementia programming, activities and housing and has been working in tandem with the architect and leadership from Montefiore and The Weils to ensure best practices in design and planning.

The Weils, a non-profit organization, opened in 2002 as an assisted living community and is owned and operated by Montefiore, one of the area’s leading providers of senior healthcare and housing. The existing Weils campus has 67 assisted living suites and 7 memory care suites in a dedicated and secure wing – all fully occupied with waiting lists. In 2009, The Weils campus expanded and opened a 29-bed rehabilitation pavilion for post-hospital care after surgery, injury or illness for physical, occupational and speech therapies along with skilled nursing, long-term care and outpatient therapies to serve its residents and individuals in the surrounding communities.

Montefiore’s expertise in dementia care and dementia residential housing is evident by the fully-occupied Willensky Residence, a Montefiore assisted living memory care community, on its Beachwood campus. Due to the success of The Willensky Residence, Montefiore is expanding this innovative concept with Phase II and is opening a second memory care pavilion adjacent to the current Willensky Residence with ten additional suites by the end of the year.
